Newer versions of Ubuntu run faster than older versions. So if you want the best performance you need to be running the newest software. Ubuntu If you're running Ubuntu with a kernel that's older than 3. I'm not joking, the performance gains are huge between Kernel 3.

You can tweak all the settings you want, but if you are looking for better disk IO the only thing that will make a significant difference is the kernel version you use. I also like to note what the original value was set to and comment the line just so I can revert changes if needed. The vm. The default value on most Linux distros such as Ubuntu is Lowering this value to 10 will cause Linux to only swap out pages when it's close to utilizing all the available memory.

This can help to reduce latency for most applications because more data should be kept in RAM instead of on disk. I suggest applying this change then rebooting the server or at least restarting the services to make sure the processes don't continue to use swap.

The default value for vm. The value set for the dirty ratio defines the maximum amount of memory that can be filled with dirty pages before they all must get flushed to the disk. With higher values, dirty pages will remain in memory longer, with lower values dirty pages gets flushed to disk more often.

Higher values can cause applications that are writing data to disk to start writing data to dirty pages in memory which will later be flushed to disk. If you have a lot of Memory and slow disks then you might not want to set this too high or else you may run into a scenario where the server needs to flush GB of dirty pages to disk if the server has say, GB RAM and the dirty ratio is set to This may not be ideal and could cause applications to hang until all the pages are on disk.

If you have fast storage and small amounts of RAM this may not be as much of an issue. TL;DR -- Percentage of total available memory that contains free and reclaimable pages at which a process that is generating disk writes will start writing out dirty data.

The bottom line is that you should measure your server's performance and application performance before you make any changes, then review the results a day later to decide if the change was good or bad. The free tips increase the number of jumping droplets in the packing and thus may improve the mass transfer efficiency. If you have been following my blog for a while and keeping a lookout at the comments then you might know a bit about me.

I recently wrote a review paper regarding the use of Machine Learning in Remote Sensing. I thought that some of you might find it interesting and insightful. It is not strictly a Python focused research paper but is interesting nonetheless. I am back with a new article. This time I will tackle a problem which seems easy enough at first but will surprize some of you. In just a short span of 2 years I can not thank Allah enough for the level of success the book has achieved.

I was recently contacted by folks from AppDynamics (a part of CISCO). They shared an infographic with me which listed 13 Python libraries. These libraries were categorized in sections. I loved going through that infographic. I hope you guys will enjoy it too. I will be starting my bachelors at Colgate University in Hamilton, US from this month. I have been pretty busy lately with making all of the required arrangements.

Everything worked like clockwork. We had vouchers for everything all neatly organized in our arrival package.

Can somebody give Helga G. We loved the notes that she put on the map for us about places we never would have discovered on our own. We were so happy with our experience that we made sure to go to the Nordic Visitor office on our last day to say thank you in person to Helga.

Iceland was spectacularly beautiful. We have also always wanted to see the Northern Lights, and I would not hesitate at all to contact Nordic Visitor in the future to arrange that trip for us. Just got back from a 7 day tour of southern Iceland organized by NordicVisitor.

I was impressed that I went into this trip with no real knowledge of what I was getting myself, my wife and three teenage children into. The trip went on without a single hitch.

The car rental, hotel reservations and activities were all perfect and we had a blast. Thank you and I would recommend this company to anyone. The only hitch was cost which was difficult to get a handle on. In particular, the activities were costly. BUT, well worth every penny.

We joined the Nordic Visitor tour party on the 25rd July following two days in Reykjavik on our own. Nordic Visitor arranged for a taxi (with welcome pack and documents) to pick us up from the airport on Thursday and on to our pre tour accommodation, we then made our way to the tour hotel on the Saturday evening. Our guide Porsteinn (Steine) met us at the welcome meeting and told us our agenda.

Sunday morning the tour set off at 9am the starting time for everyday. The tour went round the whole island (around 2000km covered) visiting all the major sites that can be reached from the N1 ring road. We were of the 'comfort' level of accommodation and all the hotels and guesthouses were of at least 3 star quality with large clean rooms and en-suite facilities.

Some had fabulous views as well. The guide constantly fed us information of the sites we visited in an informal but informative way with a few Icelandic folk stories and jokes thrown in. The transport was a mini bus taking 16 of us comfortably from site to site with various comfort stops on the way.
